Moelfre Day Trip

We had a holiday booked for the Friday - a longer sail would have been nice but we needed to be in Beaumaris on Saturday morning. So we decided on doing our usual milk-run to Moelfre - taking Llew along for the ride. Nice weather, nice winds, record times across the bay!

Notes

This was a gentleman's sail, leaving our mooring at the respectable time of 1000.  High tide was 0825 so we had the tide taking us all the way.  The wind was ideal - with the tide helping us we made very good progress getting to Puffin Island in one hour flat.  Turning towards Moelfre put us a bit into the wind; we made the best course we could until turning straight in.  In fact we made record times for us, with a through the water speed registered at 5.4 knots:

5.4 knots through the water!

Our average speed was 5 mph, with a top of 7mph over ground.  There was enough wind to make it a very good sail:

Storming out across the bay

Arriving at Moelfre in 3 hours was quite an achievement for us.  As expected on a Friday, there were not many boats out:

Approaching Moelfre - lifeboat station on right

The sun was just starting to come out at this point, which made sitting outside the pub a reality.  It was very warm.  We all had a meal - the fillet steak with pepper sauce was expensive but worth it.

View from the Kinmel Arms - watching Jenna, doing anchor watch from the shore!

We got to Moelfre before low water, and anchored in about 4m of water.  We were fairly close to some rocks but the holding there is superb, and the wind was blowing us off them anyway:

After a few pints while we waited for a favourable tide (no point in going before hand as you'd be fighting tide and not be able to get back onto your moorinng anyway!), we set off back to Beaumaris.  We positively shot across the bay in just over an hour!

Storming back!

We had worked out that we could get onto our mooring at 1800, in the event we got back slightly before that and sneaked back onto it.
