Victoria Dock

The last "official" club outing, originally with John Lomas as OOD but replaced by Alan Hollingworth.  Also in question was the destination - Alan changed it to Aber Menai but the weather (tropical storm a few days before!) persuaded him to revert to Victoria Dock.

Notes

We had a busy schedule on the saturday to get everything shore based ready and to be at the point ready to go when we floated at about 0915.  So getting a Shout at 0830 was a bit inconvenient!  Carolyn was left with the donkey work, and made contact with Abraxas who were also going.

When I came off the lifeboat, it was time to go - Swellies slack was in half an hour!  We motored fairly sharpish up the river to the bridges, catching Chinook and Enigma before they went through.  We saw an interesting looking boat as we left Beaumaris:

After the bridges, we switched the motor off and started tacking up the river.  We did pretty well - catching most boats.  We managed to avoid a whole tack compared to some of the other club boats:

Tacking down Straits - single tack to Victoria Dock after Vaynol!

We made contact with the harbourmaster, Mark, and he told us to go straight in - perhaps because he remembered us as regular visitors.  We couldn't quite hear what boat he told us to go against and ended up having to pull ourselves alongside by lines.  We secured alongside the end pontoon (on the outside of Time Out and another club boat).  We wasted no time in getting the table out and cracking a few beers open to maximise the chilled out look.  John Lomas was next in, and asked us when we sneaked in!

Alan arranged us all to have a barbeque at 1830.  We then went ashore and had a few cold beers in the hot sunshine outside the Galleri, got some barbeque from Morrisons and went into town shopping.  We found a really good butcher and got some more burgers - resolving not to bother with Morrisons for meat again!

We saw Tortuga had a very good spot as we came back from Morrisons:

The barbeque went very well that evening, on the pontoon:

We followed this up with a coffee to sober up slightly and then retired to the Royal Welsh Yacht Club.

The next day we were up by 0900 and ready to leave - in very calm weather, forcing us to motor sail (though actually we just put the sails up - they didn't do anything!).
